I. Fantasque
In teaching the legendary opening to Tomasi's Trumpet Concerto, Mary emphasizes the importance of alternative practice strategies like visualization, changing notes and rhythms, and "tidbit" practice. She moves through each section, discusses her preferred mutes, and demonstrates how she works on the most challenging spots, including the lengthy cadenza.
II. Nocturne
The mute returns in the Nocturne, as does Tomasi's improvisational spirit. Mary discusses character, breathing, articulation, and much more.
III. Final
In the Allegro Vivo, Tomasi stuns with variety and development. Mary emphasizes the movement's playful nature, sharing practice strategies, tips to nail the wide intervals, and more.
