Extensions and Non-Chord Tones: Jazz Theory

Taught by renowned trumpet player

Jeremy Siskind

In the next chapter of his Jazz Theory course, Jeremy Siskind presents a detailed survey of upper extensions (ninths, elevenths, and thirteenths) and non-chord tones. By the end of these lessons, you'll understand how to use these upper extensions when soloing, be able to recognize neighbor tones and passing tones, and get practice generating bass lines over a blues, an excellent way to build harmonic awareness.

Course Syllabus

Upper Extensions

If we continue stacking thirds past the seventh, we obtain the ninth, eleventh, and thirteenth. In this lesson, Jeremy explains how to find these notes and practice them. Using solos from Louis Armstrong and Miles Davis, he demonstrates how one can make an amazing solo both with and without using these extensions.

Non-Chord Tones

Jeremy explains that non-chord tones are identifiable because they resolve. In this lesson, he demonstrates neighbor tones, passing tones, and chromatic enclosures, finishing with a great bass line exercse over Bag's Groove.
