Course Syllabus
Fundamentals and Routine
First, we must establish a solid foundation to keep our chops healthy. Ryan demonstrates a healthy routine and explains how to work on flow, flexibility, and articulation before you take the bandstand.
Sound
What gives a lead player a good sound? Ryan discusses how to develop a full sound with specific exercises as well as mental models and doing a lot of listening.
Style and Articulation
Style refers to the nuances of time feel, attack, sustain, decay, timbre, and vibrato that we use when we play. In this lesson, Ryan discusses the subtle details of two contrasting styles: a swing chart and a Latin chart. He finishes with some thoughts on how to lock in with a rhythm section and listen deeply to music.
Range and Endurance
We all seek a greater range and more strength. Ryan shares exercises that will build your range, as well as helpful concepts like the 75% rule that teach us to manage our fatigue. He also discusses how to practice when tired, and what sorts of equipment can do the job best.
Extended Techniques
Ryan uses this lesson to discuss the execution of shakes, falls, bends, and scoops.
Leadership and Section Etiquette
Even if you play all the right notes, playing lead trumpet is ultimately about how well you lead the band on a person-to-person level. Ryan reminds us of the importance of professional etiquette, and insights on how big an impact attitude can have.
Shout Section Excerpts
Ryan plays through two excerpts from important shout sections in the big band literature: Shiny Stockings and Pennies from Heaven.
