Style and Intonation
Before we embark on performing this trumpet masterwork, Selina shares some important things to keep in mind, including her horn choice, which edition to find, which character of articulation is most appropriate, and how to approach playing in equal temperament with a pianist.
I. Allegro
Far more than just an E-flat major scale, this opening movement is intensely recognizable. Selina shows us how to make our opening statement with confidence, phrase beautifully, approach trills correctly, and shares a few tricks for dealing with wide intervals.
II. Andante
The gorgeous second movement is often challenging to play in tune, but its lyrical Adagio character truly sets it apart in the trumpet repertoire. Selina shares interpretive advice and a stunning performance.
III. Allegro
Finishing with flair, Haydn's third movement is the most technically demanding. Selina shares how important the fundamentals of Arban and Clarke are, how to properly execute these mordents, and plenty of musical advice. Good luck on your journey toward mastering one of the trumpet's most legendary pieces!
