In Breathing and Mobility Strategies, tonebase instructor John Turman demonstrates the “shark fin breath,” a focused exercise that helps all brass players deepen their inhalation and strengthen breath support.

By shaping the hand into a fin and using it to guide a slow, resonant inhale, Turman trains students to maximize air capacity and maintain an open airway — the key to richer tone and greater control.

The technique doesn’t stop there. Turman combines his breathing routine with embouchure activation and metronome timing to help players improve focus, endurance, and consistency.
